Description:
Valves linear-lanceolate with parallel to weakly convex margins and obtusely rounded, sometimes subrostrate ends (L 20-41µm, W 4-6µm, 12-13 striae in 10µm). Axial area very narrow, linear. Central area a broad (sometimes asymmetrical) fascia. Raphe straight with small central pores, clearly bent to one side. Terminal fissures ?-shaped. Transapical striae strongly radiate in the middle, very convergent near the apices. Halfway in between valve middle and apex, a sudden change in the direction of the striae is present with an acute angle between the two parts.

Notes:
Common in very wet (>85%) to semi-wet (50-60%) acid soils with higher specific conductance values (>600µS/cm). Rare in mosses and water samples.Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Larson 1974, Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001), South Georgia (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1997a), Macquarie Island (Bunt 1954), Crozet (Pierre 1977).Highly variable taxon on Ile de la Possession. It is possible that further research will split the populations into several (new) taxa. Sometimes confused with P. acoricola Hustedt, present on Kerguelen but apparently not observed on Ile de la Possession.
