Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 12-36µm
Width: 2,5-4,5µm
Striae: 9-12 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves linear with cuneately rounded, somewhat subrostrate ends (L 12-36µm, W 2,5-4,5µm, 9-12 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area a broad, symmetrical fascia. Raphe filiform with clearly laterally deflected central endings and small pores. Terminal fissures ?- to weakly sickle-shaped. Transapical striae almost parallel in the middle to convergent towards the poles.

Morphology: Naviculoid

Autecology:

Notes:

Rare, only found in higher abundances (4-5%) in so-called fell-field area, stony places lacking almost any vegetation cover. Moisture, specific conductance and nutrient values are very low. pH 6,1-6,7.Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a).Bourrelly & Manguin (1954) described this taxon as a variety of P. borealis. The dimensions and the general valve outline justify however a separate taxon. In fact, this taxon has more affinities with taxa such as P. schimanskii Krammer and P. incognita Krasske than with P. borealis. It is however not conspecific with one of these taxa since the structure of the striae is somewhat different. Therefore, we change the status into a separate species. In Van de Vijver & Beyens (1998b, 1999b) it was confused with P. lagerstedtii (Cleve) Cleve-Euler and P. intermedia (Lagerstedt) Cleve.
