Description:
Differs from the nominate species by lacking almost completely a fascia. It is possible that some striae in the middle are absent. (L 25-33µm, W 6-8µm, 12-13 striae in 10µm).

Fairly common in wet, acid soils with moderate nutrient (both phosphate and ammonium), higher chloride (>25mg/l) and higher specific conductance (>350µS/cm) values. Due to confusion with P. anglica, the ecological preferences in freshwater and moss samples needs to be re-examined.The distribution for this variety is hard to give since usually only P. microstauron is mentioned and no separation between the different varieties (or former morphotypes) is made. On Kerguelen we are certain that var. nonfasciata is present after re-examining several slides.The observed specimens always had a lower width than the valves described in Krammer (2000). Still we believe that the Crozet populations belong to this variety of P. microstauron. The only possible confusion could be made with P. anglica morph. 1 Krammer but these valves are always larger and broader.
