Description:
Valves linear with broadly rounded ends (L 38-50µm, W 7-8,5µm, 4-5 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow. Central area enlarged due to shortening of 1-2 pair of striae, but never forming a fascia. Raphe filiform to slightly lateral, arcuate with clearly curved raphe branches in the middle. Central pores distinctly expanded. Terminal fissures sickle-shaped. Transapical striae broad, parallel to moderately radiate in the middle, parallel near the pores. No longitudinal lines.

Notes:
Quite common in dry mosses (mean F-value 4,6 ± 1,9) and dry soils. Less common in open water habitats such as lakes and rivers. Large tolerance towards nutrients and salinity.Common in the entire (Sub-)Antarctic Region, always reported as P. borealis s.l.It is possible that other varieties of P. borealis are present on Ile de la Possession but the delimitation of the different varieties is very difficult in some populations. Therefore we decided not to distinguish other morphotypes or varieties and include all valves in the var. scalaris, the most widespread on the island.
