Observations

Observations: Sarah Spaulding and Rhea Esposito
Length: 26-43 µm
Width: 8-10 µm
Striae: 5-7 in 10 µm

Description:

Valve broadly linear with rounded ends. Axial area distinct. Central area transverse and rounded; typically with one or two striae surrouding the sub-fascia. Raphe curved; median raphe endings bent to one side; distal endings sickle-shaped. Thick striae, usually parallel, sometimes slightly convergent at the ends or slightly radiate at the center.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution: Widespread

Autecology:

Notes:

Although Pinnularia is reported to be abundant in aerophilic habitats worldwide, this study provided a new distribution record for the Dry Valleys. Both Patrick and Reimer (1966) and Krammer and Lange-Bertalot (1985) give much larger sizes for this species (up to 110 µm in length). However, Krammer (1992) reports a size range to 28-55 µm in length, a value closer to specimens encountered in the McMurdo Dry Valleys.
