Description:
Valves elliptic-linear with protracted, rostrated ends (L 14-16,5µm W 5,5-6µm, 24-27 striae in 10µm). Differs from the nominate variety by its smaller valves and the typical rostrate ends. Stauros always asymmetrical, completely lacking striae at one side.

Same ecology as the nominate variety. The var. rostrata seems to be more common although relative numbers always remain low.Kerguelen (Germain 1937, Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Le Cohu & Maillard 1986).C. heterostauron var. rostrata should be considered to be only a (morphological) variety of C. heterostauron as it has been described by Germain. Both taxa appear sometimes in the same samples, which means that we are not dealing with an ecological morphotype. There are however too few features to justify the separation as a new species.
