Observations: | Bart Van de Vijver |
---|---|
Length: | 24-40µm |
Width: | 4,5-7µm |
Striae: | 11-12 striae in 10µm |
Description:
Valves linear with slightly convex sides to linear-elliptical (in larger forms) with protracted ends (L 24-40µm, W 4,5-7µm, L/W ratio 4,5-6,2, 11-12 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, widening towards the central area. Central area rhomboid, forming a large fascia. Raphe filiform with distinct, weakly deflected central pores. Terminal fissures semi-circular, quite resolvable in LM). Transapical striae parallel to slightly radiate in the middle, convergent near the poles. No longitudinal bands present.

Notes:
Ile de la Possession, Crozet Archipelago, Sample (coll. date ).Quite common in all habitats ranging from relatively wet (>60%) acid soils to wet mosses (mean F-value 4,1 ± 1,9) and acid pools and lakes with low specific conductance values (<90µS/cm).So far only found on Ile de la Possession but it is possible that the species also occurs on Kerguelen and Heard Island (pers. observation). This new taxon and the newly described variety elongata (see below) can be confused with several similar taxa. P. subcapitata Gregory has a different striation pattern, especially around the central raphe endings. The striae of P. acidicola are a lot shorter with a very slowly increasing length towards the poles whereas P. subcapitata (and its variety elongata Krammer) have longer, more parallel striae near the valve middle. P. schroeterae Krammer is smaller with a more elliptical valve outline.
