Description:
Valves elliptical-lanceolate with bluntly rounded ends (L 28-34µm,W 9-10µm, 13-15 striae in 10µm). Axial area very narrow, linear. Central area stauroform, sometimes bordered by very short striae. The central part is depressed, due to two weakly raised parallel ribs, close to the valve margins. Raphe filiform, slightly curved with clearly marked central pores and hooked terminal fissures. Transapical striae curved to sigmoid, convergent near the poles.

Found in several soil samples. Seems to prefer elevated salinity conditions.South Shetland Islands (Björck et al. 1991), James Ross Island (Björck et al. 1996), Horseshoe Island (Wasell & Hakansson 1992, Wasell 1993).Based on the characteristics of the axial area and the raphe endings, this taxon clearly belongs to the genus Pinnuavis.
