Description:

Valves linear to linear-elliptical with clearly convex margins and subcapitate, broadly rounded ends (L 12-15,5µm, W 4-4,5µm, 18-23 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area rectangular, bordered by 3-5 shortened striae. Raphe filiform with deflected terminal fissures. Central pores distinct, slightly bent to the opposite side (compared with the terminal endings). Transapical striae uniseriate, clearly radiate in the middle, parallel to weakly convergent towards the apices.

Notes:

Fairly common in some soil and freshwater samples. The water samples have been taken from slightly acid (pH 6,0) larger lakes.Probably also present on Ile Amsterdam where similar valves have been found (Van de Vijver pers. observation).Several taxa show some affinities like N. ventralis Krasske, N. digna Hustedt and N. mediaconvexa but they all are not satisfyingly similar to the population we found on Ile de la Possession. A more detailed (comparative) analysis will be necessary in order to fully understand the taxonomical position of this taxon. It is highly probable that it belongs to the genus Sellaphora but until further investigations have been done, we decided to place it temporarily in Naviculadicta.
