Observations

Observations: Sarah Spaulding and Rhea Esposito
Length: 19-32 µm
Width: 4-5 µm
Striae: 4-5 µm

Description:

Valve elliptical-lanceolate with sub-capitate ends. Narrow central area with the two middle striae "fainter" than the other striae. Axial area present, widening towards the central portion of the valve. Raphe straight and simple with slightly hooked terminal raphe endings. Striae slightly radiate in the center to slightly convergent at the ends.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution: South Victorialand endemic

Autecology:

Notes:

This species was originally described as Navicula (Pinnularia) shackletoni by West and West (1911). VanLandingham (1975) claims that Mills (1934) transferred it to Pinnularia. However, Mills (1934) appears to have identified this species as both Navicula and Pinnularia, and no clear species transfer was made. West and West (1911) also described a separate variety, N. shackletoni var. pelucida, which is distinguished by having the middle two striae "reduced" instead of "faint." However, no such valves were encountered in this study.
