Observations

Observations: Sarah Spaulding and Rhea Esposito
Length: 19-27 µm
Width: 5-7 µm
Striae: 18-20 in 10 µm

Description:

Valve elliptical-lanceolate with ends rostrate to rostral capitate. Central area elliptical to rectangular. Axial area small or indistinct. Raphe simple, straight and very thin, narrowing at the distal ends. Striae radiate at the center; slightly convergent at the distal ends.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution: South Victorialand endemic

Autecology:

Notes:

This diatom appears to be closely related to Navicula cryptocephla, but the valve is more rounded with elongate endings. The valve shape and striae pattern resembles that of Navicula hofmanniae, but the specimens encountered in this study were smaller and with denser striae. The diatom also resembles Navicula gregaria, but the striae are less punctate. Thus, this appears to be a new species of Navicula.
