Description:
Valves linear with cuneately rounded ends (L 26-44µm, W 6-9µm). Central area elliptical with an elongate, rectangular central nodule. Transapical striae in the center clearly radiate, consisting of large areolae (9-12 in 10µm). Other striae nearly parallel, composed of large rounded areolae (18-21 in 10µm). Longitudinal canal rib-like, terminating in a small helictoglossa. Raphe filiform, straight with central endings terminating between the first and third row of areolae, hooked to broadly curved. Terminal fissures deflected to the same side, bifurcated.

Notes:
Mostly found in very dry, circumneutral soils with low specific conductance, phosphate and nitrogen values. Rare in soils and mosses.Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, Spaulding et al. 1999).Recently described from Kerguelen by Spaulding et al. (1999). Included within N. portomontana Cleve by Bourrelly & Manguin (1954) and Van de Vijver et al. (1998a). Detailed information regarding the fine morphology of this taxon is given in Spaulding et al. (1999).
