Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 22-42µm
Width: 4-6µm
Striae: 22-26 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves linear to linear-lanceolate with weakly convex margins and broadly rounded ends (L 22-42µm, W 4-6µm, 22-26 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area a very broad, rectangular fascia. Raphe straight or slightly curved, filiform with weakly deflected central pores and clear terminal fissures. Transapical striae almost parallel to weakly radiate, weakly convergent near the poles. A fine longitudinal band present on the striae.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution:

Autecology:

Notes:

Fairly common in relatively dry (<40%) slightly acid to circumneutral soils with low specific conductance and nutrient values and relatively wet mosses (mean F-value 3,9±1,7). Less common in water habitats such as lakes and rivers.Widespread in the entire (Sub-)Antarctic Region. The original C. bacillum (Grunow) Cleve is a typical brackish-marine taxon. Due to some taxonomical drift, a lot of freshwater valves have been associated with this taxon. Today, these valves are no longer considered to be C. bacillum but the real taxonomical status of this taxon is unknown. Therefore, we still name the valves found on Crozet C. bacillum until the true status is revealed.
