Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 25-38 µm
Width: 10-11 µm
Striae: Central: 16-18, Distal: 18-24 in 10 µm

Description:

Valves elliptical with distinct convex margins and rostrate to capitate apices. Valves length 28-38 µm, valve width 10-11 µm. Axial area rather narrow and linear, only very slightly widening to form the central area. Raphe filiform and straight with short, clearly hooked proximal raphe endings not extending into the first row of areolae. Distal raphe endings very short and never extending onto the mantle. Distal raphe ends simple, non-divergent and slightly deflected towards the same side as the proximal raphe endings. Central striae prominently radiate and more spaced, whereas the more distant striae less spaced and only slightly radiate and becoming almost parallel near the apices. Central stria number 16-18 in 10 µm whereas the number of distal striae ranging from 18 to 24 in 10 µm. Striae composed of a large (7-9) number of rows of c-shaped areolae as is often found in the genus *Gomphonema*. Row of areolae bordering the axial and central area s separated from the other rows by a small hyaline line. Towards the distal raphe endings, several canal puncta visible. Unfortunately, the internal structure could not be observed.

Notes:

Muelleria rostrata presents several features that are unusual for species in Muelleria. The distal raphe endings are very short and never extend onto the valve mantle. All other Muelleria species seem to present long terminal raphe fissures. The gomphonemoid c-shaped areolae also have not been observed before. Typically, areolae are either rounded or slit-like. These two features, combined with the more elliptical outline of the valves, are distinct for M. rostrata. Therefore it is distinguished as a separate species.

Striae: Central: 16-18, Distal: 18-24 in 10 µm

Original Description:

Valvae ellipticae marginibus distincte convexis apicibusque rostratis ad capitatos. Longitudo 28-38 µm, latitudo 10-11 µm. Area axialis angusta, linearis, leviter dilatans ad aream centralem. Raphe filiformis, recta terminationibus proximalibus brevissimis unilateraliter uncis, numquam extensis in primam seriem areolarum. Terminationes distales breves, numquam divergentes. Striae centrales (6-8 striae) distantiores, manifeste radiatiores. Striae distantes leviter radiatae, parallelae ad polos. Striae, 16-18 in 10 µm ad centrum, 18-24 in 10 µm ad polos, compositae septem ad novem seriebus areolarum sicut in forma litterae ‘c’. Plures puncta canalis adsunt.
