Observations

Observations: Sarah Spaulding and Rhea Esposito
Length: 14-48 µm
Width: 6-10 µm
Striae: 15-17 in 10 µm at the center; 18-23 in 10 µm at the ends

Description:

Heavily silicified; valves slightly triundulate; slightly to strongly gibbous in the middle; ends broadly rounded.  Central area oval shaped.  A narrow, rib-like, longitudinal canal is present.  Striae strongly radiate in the middle portion of the valve; parallel or slightly convergent towards the apices.  Raphe straight; proximal raphe ends hooked and extending past the first or second row of longitudinal striae; distal raphe endings deflected in a broad curve.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution: South Victorialand endemic

Autecology:

Notes:

Muelleria meridionalis appears robust and heavily silicified compared to M. peraustralis. The central striae are prominent because of the relatively large transapical chambers within the valve. Muelleria meridionalis is presently known only from the type locality. It is found in association with M. peraustralis, in moist soils, streams, and benthis cyanobacterial mats of lakes. Soils and streams are exposed to hight light intesities, while benthic cyanobacteral mats are heavily shaded by lake ice-cover. Soils and streambeds are ?freeze-dried?; for all but a few weeks of the austral summer, and the temperature of liquid water, when present, is near 4°C.
