Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 7-8µm
Width: 2,5-3µm
Striae: 30-35 striae in 10µm

Description:

Morphology resembles Mayamaea atomus var. atomus. Valves are smaller (L 7 8µm, W 2,5-3µm). Number of striae is much higher: 30-35 in 10µm, not resolvable in LM.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution:

Autecology:

Notes:

Commonly found in pools and lakes with (very) high pH-values (7,5-10!) and high specific conductance values (200-2090µS/cm). Almost absent in moss and soil samples.South Georgia (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1996), Maritime Antarctic Region (Van de Vijver & Beyens 1997b).The ecological difference between the two varieties atomus and permitis is very remarkable. All samples where these two taxa have been found, were re-examined resulting in the finer ecological characterization of the two taxa with atomus being a typical soil diatom and permitis preferring pools/lakes with some sort of (animal) disturbance.
