Description:
Valves rhombic-lanceolate to lanceolate in larger valves with slightly protracted, obtusely rounded ends (L 25-43µm, W 8-11µm, 13-17 striae in 10µm). Axial area fairly narrow, linear. Central area enlarged, almost rectangular with a fascia that does however not reach the valve margins due to some shortened striae. A single, rounded stigma present, solitary placed. Raphe filiform, straight with clear, deflected central endings. Terminal fissures short, deflected towards the same side as the central pores. Transapical striae highly radiate in the middle, more convergent towards the poles. Each stria consists of at least three areolae.

Notes:
Common in soil samples. The highest abundances were reached in dry (<30%) sample, clearly influenced by penguin rookeries (gentoo penguins on Crique de Noel and king penguins near the base). Nutrient conditions and specific conductance values were rather elevated. Rare in mosses and typical water habitats. So far only found on Ile de la Possession.Although the number of striae is rather low, compared with the original description by Carlson, we still believe that these valves belong to this taxon.
