Description:
Valves lanceolate to linear-lanceolate with convex margins and broadly rounded apices. Smaller valves tending to become more elliptic-lanceolate. Valve length 19–29 µm, valve width 6.5–8.0 µm. Axial area rather wide, linear, forming a large hyaline area bordering the raphe branches, widening near the apices. Central area rectangular to slightly wedge-shaped forming a stauros bordered on both sides by one row of rounded marginal areolae. One more or less circular stigma present, rather isolated in between the central raphe endings and the valve face margin. Raphe branches straight. Central raphe endings distinctly deflected opposite to the stigma, bent with simple central pores. Terminal raphe fissures clearly elongated, first weakly deflected towards the same side as the central endings, then rather straight towards the valve apices, terminating well after the final row of areolae. Transapical striae radiate throughout, 20–22 in 10 µm. Striae ending at some distance before the valve apices leaving a rather large hyaline area at the valve apices; each stria consisting of two to three small, rounded areolae. Marginal areolae larger and near the central area weakly transapically elongated. The internal structures could not be observed.

Notes:
Luticola nelidae can be confused with L. simplex, L. beyensii and L. acidoclinata. They all present the typical deflected and bent central raphe endings but they can be separated from L. nelidae since they have a more rhombic valve outline, completely different terminal raphe fissures (i.e. twice deflected: first towards the primary side and then returning towards the secondary side) and a higher number of areolae per stria (3–5 vs 2–3 in L. nelidae). Luticola aequatorialis (Heiden) Lange-Bertalot has a more rhombic outline but shows similar central raphe endings. Luticola australomutica has a similar outline but a completely different raphe structure. L. falknerorum Metzeltin & Lange-Bertalot is much larger (16–46 µm) with different (i.e. clearly deflected) terminal fissures.

Original Description:
Valvae lanceolatae ad lineares-lanceolatas marginibus leviter convexis apicibusque non protractis sed late rotundatis. Valvae minores potius ellipticae-lanceolatae. Longitudo 19–29 µm, latitudo 6.5–8.0 µm. Area axialis moderate lata, dilatata ad polos. Area centralis formans staurum rectangularem. Ad marginem una series areolarum rotundarum adest. Stigma solitaria punctiformis adest. Rami raphis recta extremis centralibus curtis distincte flexis opposite stigma poris centralibus indistinctis. Fissurae terminales raphis claro elongatae. Prima pars fissurarum deflexa ad latus terminationum centralarum sed pars extrema recta ad polos Striae transapicales omnino radiatae, 20–22 in 10 µm. Ad polos, striae absunt formans aream hyalinam magnam.
