Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 10-25µm
Width: 5-8µm
Striae: 18-21 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves elliptical with broadly rounded, (sub-)capitate or (in smaller specimen) only protruded ends. Obserevd cells usually short (L 10-25µm, W 5-8µm, 18-21 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, linear. Central area elliptical to transapically rectangular, usually bordered by several shortened striae. A single stigma is present, at the secondary side. Raphe filiform with weakly deflected central endings and small pores. Terminal fissures usually very short and almost straight. Transapical striae radiate throughout the entire valve.

Morphology: Naviculoid

Notes:

Fairly common in soils influenced by marine animals (penguins, albatrosses, elephant seals) with elevated specific conductance and nutrient values.Widespread in the entire (Sub-)Antarctic Region.Luticola muticopsis is a highly variable taxon. Kobayasi (1965) tried to separate all possible variations in several types (such as f. reducta, f. evoluta). If should identify the possible type that occurs on Ile de la Possession, it is clear that it is somewhat intermediate between the f. reducta and evoluta. On the Antarctic Peninsula, L. muticopsis is usually found within penguin rookeries (personal observation). The fact that most observations on Ile de la Possession, have been made in samples taken from rookeries or other placed with increased animal influence, justifies probably entirely the identification of muticopsis instead of being a (new?) variety of mutica. The analysis of the SEM structure confirms this statement. The only point of difference is the larger number of striae in 10µm (18-21 on Ile de la Possession vs. 13-14 generally).
