Length: | 12-37 µm |
Width: | 5-9 µm |
Striae: | 15-18 in 10 µm |
Description:
Valves sub-elliptical, with lateral margins extended or subparallel; endings rostrate to slightly capitate. Axial area present, widening towards the central region of the valve. Central area typically elliptical or oval shaped but occasionally stauroform; usually with a single row of poroids around the outer edge. A solitary stigma present in the central area. Raphe straight; median raphe and terminal raphe endings slightly hooked in the opposite direction of the stigma. Striae radiate throughout, consisting of 3-5 distinct puncta except in the median portion of the valve and at the poles.

Notes:
Striae density was originally described as 13-14 in 10 µm by Van Huerck (1909) and subsequently by Baker (1967) and Kellogg et al. (1980). However, we observed striae counts (15-18 in 10 µm) that agree more closely with those of Ko-Bayashi (1965) and Krammer and Lange-Bertalot (1986). In the past, there has been much discussion concerning the validity of the forms (capitata, evoluta, and reducta) of this genus (Ko-Bayashi, 1965; Hustedt, 1966; Kellogg et al. 1980). However, most specimens examined had an elliptical or rounded central area, while the other forms of this species (capitata, evoluta, and reducta) always had an acute-angled sub-fascia. Thus, this attribute appears to be a valid character for further separating this species from its forms.
