Observations

Observations: Sarah Spaulding and Rhea Esposito
Length: 12-26 µm
Width: 6-9.5 µm
Striae: 16-18 in 10 µm in the center; 18-22 per 10 micrometers at the ends

Description:

Valve elliptical with broadly extendend, subcapitate endings.  Narrow axial area present.  Central area varying from elliptical to an acute-angled area, usually with a single row of poroids around the outer edge.  A solitary stigma present in the central area.  Raphe straight; median and terminal raphe endings slightly hooked in the opposite direction of the stigma.  Striae radiate throughout, poroids elongate in appearance.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution: Antarctic endemic

Autecology:

Notes:

This species is similar to L. muticopsis var. capitata but the central portion of the valve is much more rounded, and the poroids of the transapical striae are more elongate.  West and West (1911) and Fritsch (1912) both appear to have identified this same diatom but identified it as Pinnularia globiceps and P. globiceps fo. amphicephala, respectively.  Hustedt (1966) elevated Navicula muticopsis var. gaussii to the species level and synonymized P. globiceps (sensu West and West, 1911) with it. The specimens of Navicula gausii observed by Hustedt (1966) had a length of 16-34 µm and width of 9-14 µm. The specimens identified in this study have a smaller size range and more closely conform with the size ranges given by West and West (1911) and Fritsch (1912).  Because the original description of N. muticopsis var. gaussii  by Heiden (1928) gives a length of 30-31 µm and width of 12-14, the species in the Dry Valleys region may not be the same as the one described by Heiden (1928).
