Length: | 22-43 µm |
Width: | 7.5-10 µm |
Striae: | 16-18 in 10 µm |
Description:
Valves linear-lanceolate with slightly rostrate ends. Valve length 22-43 µm, width 7.5-10 µm. Axial area narrowly lanceolate. Central area rectangular or elongate-elliptical and asymmetrical to the apical axis. A solitary stigma is present on the narrower side of the central area. Central nodule is distinctly thickened. Raphe linear; both proximal and distal raphe ends hook slightly in the opposite direction of the stigma. Striae are composed of punctate areolae and number 16-18 in 10 µm. Striae radiate throughout and are more broadly spaced in the central part of the valve. Valve mantle is shallow. SEM: Externally, striae terminate before the distal valve margin forming a distinct hyaline area. Distal raphe terminates in a narrow hyaline band. Stigma opens as a simple external pore. Internally, striae lack distinct openings and are transapically elongate. Stigma opening a curved and lipped slit.

Notes:
Luticola laeta is most similar to the taxon L. murrayi West and West (Mann) non sensu Hustedt. Luticola murrayi has coarser striae (14 in 10 µm, as compared to 16-18 in 10 µm in L. laeta) and the ends are more narrowly rostrate than L. murrayi. Ko-Bayashi (1963) examined the range of morphological variation in Luticola muticopsis (van Heurck) Mann and Navicula muticopsis f. murrayi (West et West) Ko-Bayashi. His numerous images show specimens with more expanded central margins and distinctly capitate ends (Ko-Bayashi 1963).
