Length: 5-16µm
Width: 2-3,5µm
Striae: 22-40 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves elliptical to linear with bluntly rounded ends (L 5-16µm, W 2-3,5µm, 22 40 striae in 10µm). Frustules often in long chains. Axial area lanceolate. Striae consist of one row of 4-6 round areolae, continuing without any interruption over the mantle. Small linking spines are regularly placed on the margins between the striae. Sometimes spines are completely lacking. No apical porefields present. The most striking feature of this taxon (and the entire genus (Lange-Bertalot 1997)) is the presence of apically running short raphe-like vestiges. Valves without spines present longer raphe branches (1/5 to 1/6 of the valve length).

Notes:

Quite abundant in rivers and small pools on the entire island. pH-optimum 6,8. Overall present in mosses (optimal F-value between IV and V) and wet to semi-dry soils.Kerguelen (Le Cohu & Maillard 1986, Van de Vijver et al. 1998a, 2001)In LM, this taxon can be distinguished from Staurosira construens and S. venter by differences in L/W ratio.
