Observations

Observations: Sarah Spaulding and Rhea Esposito
Length: 7.5-10 µm
Width: 4-5.5 µm
Striae: 45-55 in 10 µm

Description:

Valve elliptical with rounded ends. Strongly silicified axial area which is slightly constricted at the central nodule and "punctate" in appearance at the poles.  Central area indistinct.  Raphe straight and simple. Striae are usually not visible under the light microscope.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution: Widespread

Autecology:

Notes:

This is a very small diatom that is most easily identified by its lightly silicified valve and its strongly silicified, linear axial area (Patrick & Reimer, 1966). Krammer & Lange-Bertalot (1986) record that striae number 45-55 in 10 µm.
