Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 150-200µm
Width: 19-25µm
Striae: 6-7 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves linear to linear-lanceolate with parallel margins and slightly cuneiform ends (L 150-200µm, W 19-25µm, L/W ratio ±7,8). Axial area linear-lanceolate, moderately narrow (1/4-1/5 of valve width). Central area rhomboid with an asymmetrical fascia. Raphe straight, slightly lateral. Central pores laterally deflected, teardrop-like. Terminal fissures viridis-like. Transapical striae moderately radiate in the middle, parallel to convergent near the poles, 6-7 in 10µm. A narrow longitudinal band is present.

Morphology: Naviculoid

Notes:

Ruisseau de la Pompe, Ile de la Possession, Crozet Archipelago, Sample BM037 (coll. date 10/12/1997).Only found in one moss sample, submerged in a small pool with a pH value of 7,5 and a specific conductance of 95µS/cm.So far only found on Ile de la Possession.P. extralonga differs from all other large Pinnularia-taxa by the combination of size, fascia and raphe structure. The name in intended to stress the large size of this taxon since on the Subantarctic Islands, the general habitus of the diatom flora is much smaller.
