Observations

Observations: Bart Van de Vijver
Length: 30-40µm
Width: 5-7µm
Striae: 8-9 striae in 10µm

Description:

Valves linear with parallel margins and obtusely rounded, not protracted ends (L 30-40µm, W 5-7µm, 8-9 striae in 10µm). Axial area narrow, straight. Central area a broad, rectangular fascia. Raphe filiform with deflected central endings and small central pores. Terminal fissures ?-shaped. Transapical striae parallel throughout the entire valve.

Morphology: Naviculoid
Distribution:

Autecology:

Notes:

Rare in soil samples. In sample BA74 most of the valves have been found. The sample was taken from a dry fell-field area under some mosses.Kerguelen (Bourrelly & Manguin 1954, Le Cohu & Maillard 1986)Only the valve outline might justify the taxonomical position as a variety of P. quadratarea (A. Schmidt) Cleve. The structure of the striae, the structure of the raphe and the dimensions completely contradict this position. Therefore we decided to raise this taxon to species level. It bears some affinities with taxa related to P. borealis, P. intermedia (Lagerstedt) Cleve and P. lagerstedtii (Cleve) Cleve-Euler but there are sufficient differences (number of striae, valve outline) to justify a separate taxon.
