Description:

Valve distinctly capitate; possibly with one lateral margin slightly convex and the other parellel (although this does not appear to be a consistent character).  Axial area present, widening towards the central region of the valve.  Central area an acute-angled sub-fascia, usually with a single row of poroids around the outer edge.  A solitary stigma present on the sub-fascia.  Raphe straight; median and terminal raphe endings slightly hooked in the opposite direction of the stigma.  Striae radiate throughout, consisting of 3-5 distinct puncta except in the median portion of the valve and at the poles.

Notes:

The strongly capitate endings, the greater width of the valves, and the acute-angled sub-fascia separate this form from L. muticopsis. Luticola muticopsis fo. capitata was described with a striae density of 13-14 in 10 µm by Carlson (1913) and subsequently by Kellogg et al. (1980).  However, striae counts in this study (15-18 in 10 µm) agree more closely with those of Ko-Bayashi (1965). Both Hustedt (1961-1966) and Kellogg et al. (1980) make arguements for placing this form in synonymy with Navicula muticopsis.  However, Ko-Bayashi (1965) argues that form capitata should be upheld as a different form based on the unique valve shape (i.e. the one convex margin and the one parallel margin).  Although the parallel/convex margin does not appear to be a consistent character, capitata appears to be is a unique form of L. muticopsis based upon the strongly capitate endings and acute-angled sub-fascia. Luticola permuticopsis was described in 2011 and best fits the species observed in the Dry Valleys, and this taxon has been reassigned this name over Luticola muticopsis fo. capitata on 5 August 2014.

Original Description:

Valvae lineares-lanceolatae ad lineares-ellipticae marginibus distincte convexis apicibusque late rotundatis, stricte capitatis. Longitudo 18.5-26.0 µm, latitudo 7.3-9.2 µm. Area axialis moderate angusta, linearis, paene non dilatata in aream centralem apicesque. Area centralis formans staurum rectangularem ad cuneatum, marginatum serie una areolarum rotundatarum magnarum. Stigma paene rotundata adest in extremo striae curate vel isolata inter mediam partem valvae marginesque. Raphe filiformis, recta, terminationibus proximalibus unilateraliter clare deflexis, poris centralibus leviter expansis. Fissure distales deflectis, clare expansae. Striae transapicales fortiter rodiatae omnino, 18-22 in 10 µm. Areolae 3-6 per striam, moderate magnae.
